Goddess Durga is symbolic of the positive energy, divine forces known as divine shakti (energy/ power). Durga has the power to destroy all the negative forces of evil & wickedness. She protects her devotees from evil powers and safeguards them.
Navratri festival celebrates the nine nights dedicated to the nine avatars of Goddess Durga namely Shailaputri, Brahmcharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandmata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Sidhidatri. Navratri is the festival that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, Navratri falls in the end of September or the beginning of October around harvest time and, is celebrated for nine days. Day 10 after Navratri, Dussera or Vijaya Dashami is celebrated to revere the great victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura and the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. In many parts of the country, Navratri is celebrated with dandiya, and garba-raas.
Durga is depicted as Hindu Goddess who rides a lion or tiger, has four arms each carrying a weapon, and is often portrayed as defeating Mahishasura. Divine consort of Lord Shiva, she is also revered as Parvati or mother goddess.
